Mid August to Late August Fishing Report

Hello from The Fish Guy. As many of you know the fishing the past couple of weeks has been all over the map. We have had some absolutely great days but also some of the slowest days of the season. I know you are going to ask, "Why is the fishing slow?" Well, I have a very good answer...I don't know. But, if I had to make an educated guess (or make something up...you decide) I'd tell you that a combination of lower water levels, warm air temps, sunny days and less consistent hatches usually add up to slower than normal fishing. Then you might ask, "Why has the fishing been really good some days?" I have an answer for that too...there are a bunch of grasshoppers around this year and when the conditions have been right the hopper fishing has been awesome. Last year the hopper fishing didn't turn on until Mid September but this year it started around the first of August and I expect it to continue for several more weeks. The PMD hatches are all over, but we are seeing some of the smaller Sulphurs hatching. These are very small mayflies and even when the fish are up and eating them this can be very technical, but fun, fishing. With any luck the next time we fish together the wind will be blowing, the hoppers will be getting blown into the water and the fish will be looking for hoppers. If not, we'll still have a good time and might even catch a fish or two. There's still more than a month left to the fishing season so let's get out a couple more times before the snow arrives.
