Nature Center Events - Week of June 13-19

3 Creek Ranch's activity calendar for this week includes new hiking trails, a road bike ride in Idaho and many other great events!

MONDAY, JUNE 13
Hike
: Wilson Canyon-Snow King (map)
Time: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Description: Moderate - Standard Pace
Distance: 7.7 miles RT
Elevation Gain: 2,050’     Maximum Elevation: 7,888’
We’ll start this hike from the trailhead located behind the Lower Valley Power and Light (LVPL) building, located on HW 89 across the road from The Bird restaurant. This trail gains almost 1,200’ of elevation in first 2.25 miles. We’ll hike through open meadows, thick forests of fir and aspen, with dramatic rocky outcroppings
along the narrow canyon. We also hike through sections of the 2012 Wilson Canyon forest fire which burned almost 3,500 acres. The trail will wind around the back side and over the top of Snow King, then descend to the bottom where we have our shuttle vehicle.
Bring: daypack, snack, rain jacket, warm layer, hat, sunscreen
Notes: We will need to leave a shuttle vehicle at the base of Snow King. Dogs are welcome to join us.

Office Hours
Time: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: Nature Center
Notes: Stop by the Nature Center for a casual visit to say hello, request some help planning your next outdoor adventure, or bring your guests for a tour of the Center.

TUESDAY, JUNE 14
Hike
: Ski Lake
Time: 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Description: Easy - Standard Pace
Distance: 5 miles R/T
Elevation Gain: 1,000’     Maximum Elevation: 8,720’
This is a favorite hike of mine along a well-traveled trail. The trailhead starts half-way up Teton Pass at the ‘Phillips Pass’ sign, with a parking area on both sides of the road. If time permits, we can continue past the lake to the north ridge that offers views into Phillips canyon. A beautiful hike and renowned for its abundant wildflowers and classic mountain vistas.
Bring: daypack, food, rain jacket, sunscreen
Notes: Dogs are welcome to join us!

Stewardship: Stream Volume Measurements
Time: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center
Description: Conducting a ‘stream profile’ consists of using a ‘digital flow meter’ that records the average volume of water at mid-depth at every foot across the creek. This is how we come up with an average stream velocity. We will set up a standard protocol for recording at all three spring creeks. This is a great opportunity to pull on the waders, enjoy a slow quiet morning on the water, learn more about the ecology of our precious creeks and help me record meaningful data!
Bring: appropriate clothing for the morning, rain or shine!
Notes: We will provide hip waders.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15
Road Cycling: Cedron Road Loop - Victor, Idaho
Time: 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Location: Meet at Nature Center at 8:00 AM
Description: Moderate 15-17 MPH
Distance: 25.5 miles R/T
Elevation Gain: 460’     Maximum Elevation: 6,193’
This is a very enjoyable ride along the rural back roads of the west side of Victor, Idaho along the base of the Big Hole Mountains. Starting and finishing at Fitzgerald’s bike shop, we will ride relatively flat terrain with small dips and rises on a quiet road that offers continuous views of Teton Valley and the west side of the Tetons. The northern end of our route takes us through Driggs, Idaho, where we return to
Victor along the bike path. Great coffee and treats at Fitzgerald’s Bike shop awaits us at the finish.
Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes: Expect minimal traffic on the Cedron Road. Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Office Hours
Time: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: Nature Center
Notes: Stop by the Nature Center for a casual visit to say hello, request some help planning your next outdoor adventure, or bring your guests for a tour of the Center.

Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Description: Moderate - Standard Pace
Distance: 6 miles R/T
Elevation Gain: 1,170'     Maximum Elevation: 7, 482'
We will start this hike about 6 miles up the Hoback Canyon at the end of the Bryan Flats Road. This is a beautiful hike that loops through open forests to a ridge line that offer spectacular views in all directions of the Hoback Range. We will travel on a well maintained trail. Expect a beautiful display of wildflowers, especially the Arrowleaf balsamroot and Wyethia as we make our way along the ridge line.
Bring: Daypack, lunch, water, sunscreen
Notes: Dogs are welcome.

FRIDAY, JUNE 17
Day Hike: Black Canyon: bottom to top
Time: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:00 AM
Description: Strenuous - Standard Pace
Distance: 9 miles R/T
Elevation Gain: 2,800'     Maximum Elevation: 9,200
We will start this hike at the base of the Old Pass Road and ascend up the pass via the Black Canyon trail, a wonderful hike through towering subalpine and Douglas fir forests, aspen meadows and creek crossings. We will also get a glimpse of recent Jackson Hole history as we explore the various artifacts left behind from the old road into Jackson Hole. From Peak 9279 (Mt.Ellie), we descend the 1.5 miles surrounded by wildflowers and incredible vistas of the Snake River Range and the Jackson Valley.
Bring: daypack, snack, rain jacket, warm layer, hat, sunscreen, hiking shoes.
Notes: We will leave a shuttle vehicle at the base of the pass for our return.
