Monday, February 22
Ski Tour: Oxbow Bend Tour (partly sunny, maybe snow, low 30’s)
Time: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Location: Meet at the Nordic Center at 9:00 AM.
Description: EASY. 4.5 miles R/T, elevation gain: 20’, maximum elevation: 6744’.
We will begin this tour about 3 miles past the Moran entrance into Teton Park at the
Oxbow Bend turnout. This is an easy ski tour over flat terrain, and is one of my all-time
favorite areas to enjoy a quiet afternoon on skis. There is always a good chance of seeing
Trumpeter swans, moose, and river otters with Mount Moran as a backdrop.
Bring: Recommended gear for all our Monday Ski Tours: a small daypack, insulated water
bottles, (a small thermos of hot tea or cocoa is always a pleasure to have), lunch, an extra
warm layer, hat and gloves. A nice lightweight ‘down puffy jacket’ is a perfect warm layer
for our lunch stop. Tour is weather dependent.
** Update on recent warm weather and conditions of our Nordic track **
Overall, our track is still in good condition, although several small areas are beginning to
melt through, snow on bridge across hole #2 is melting quickly, but a short walk across this
bridge will allow good skiing on the remaining track. With this unpredictable weather cycle
we are in, it will be difficult to forecast track conditions until shortly before the scheduled
event. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for updates. Recommendations to consider:
-Freezing nighttime and warm mid-day temperatures = very hard and icy track in morning
and soft to mushy track by mid-day: I recommend skiing 10:30 am-2:00pm;
-Above freezing nighttime and warm mid-day = soft track throughout the day: I
recommend starting as early as possible and being done by 10:30-11 am.
