Nature Center Events - Week of June 27 - July 3

A few strenuous hikes featured in this week's Nature Center events!

MONDAY, JUNE 27
Hike
: Cream Puff Peak
Time: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 7:30 AM
Description: Strenuous
Distance: 12.5 miles R/T
Elevation Gain: 3,415'     Maximum Elevation: 9.685’
Although I’m uncertain as to the origin of the name don’t let the name fool you into thinking this is an easy hike! We’ll begin this hike about 10 miles up the Hoback Canyon, gain almost 2,000’ of elevation in the first three miles (2,400’ gain in first 3 miles of Sleeping Indian) followed by a mile of relatively flat terrain along a beautiful ridge, followed by a climb of about 1,200’ in the next mile (think walking up Snow King.) to the top of the summit ridge. Once on this ridge, we will have about a mile with a short climb to Cream Puff Peak. There are some short sections of unmaintained but easy trail through aspen and forested terrain. Aside from a beautiful trail through immense
fields of wildflowers, the surrounding mountain views from this hike are about as magnificent and stunning as you will find for the effort..from the summit ridge, we’ll see the Teton Range to the North, the Gros Ventre Wilderness Range to our East, the Wind River
Range to the Southeast, then the Hoback, Wyoming and the Salt River Mountain Ranges fill whatever skyline is remaining! Hopefully I’ve convinced you that this peak hike is well worth the strenuous effort.
Bring: daypack, plenty of water, snacks, lunch, hiking poles if you have them
Notes: dPlease note the early 7:30 AM departure from the Nature Center. I recognize that this a difficult early season hike, so I am requiring an RSVP if you are interested in joining us.

TUESDAY, JUNE 28
Hike: Birding the South Park Management Area

Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Description: Easy
Distance: 1-3 miles R/T
Elevation Gain: negligible     Maximum Elevation: 6,000’
This is a wonderful area to hike, flat terrain, minutes from 3 Creek Ranch, pleasant views of the Snake River and Munger Mountain. Great birding too.
Bring: daypack, snack, rain jacket, warm layer, hat, sunscreen, hiking shoes
Notes: Dogs are welcome to join us!

Stewardship: Stream Volume Measurements
Time: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center
Description: Conducting a ‘stream profile’ consists of using a ‘digital flow meter’ that records the average volume of water at mid-depth at every foot across the creek. This is how we come up with an average stream velocity. We will set up a standard protocol for recording at all three spring creeks. This is a great opportunity to pull on the waders, enjoy a slow quiet morning on the water, learn more about the ecology of our precious creeks and help me record meaningful data!
Bring: appropriate clothing for the morning, rain or shine!
Notes: We will provide hip waders.
