We will follow a ridge-top trail almost the entire way through open meadows of wildflowers and forest stands of subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce. This entire hike follows a well-worn trail, and offers one of the most spectacular views of the entire Jackson Hole valley. A fantastic way start to any day!

Starting from Driggs, Idaho, we’ll have a relaxing start in the first 5 miles by climbing 500’, then climb 1,500’ in the next 7 miles to the base of Targhee Ski Area at 8,063’. While this might sound a bit daunting, the scenery on the west side of the Tetons is nothing short of spectacular, and the road has a wide shoulder and maintains a steady but moderate grade. For comparison, Wilson to the top of Teton Pass is 5.5 miles and gains 2,430’ of elevation gain! Great refreshments await at the coffee shop and bakery in Driggs upon our return.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.

We will be hiking through beautiful stands of fir, spruce, aspen and open meadows, with wonderful views throughout the entire hike. One of the highlights of this hike is to catch the fireweed in full bloom over expansive subalpine meadows in the last 650 feet to Phillips Pass. This hike offers great views of the valley.

Birding Walk: Bring your binoculars and bird book! At 3 Creek Ranch

Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 7:30 AM

We’ll spend the morning looking for birds from the NatureCenter and along 3 Creek Drive. I have enjoyed watching birds from this road for the past 16 years, noting a diversity of waterfowl in the ponds, grassland birds in the meadows, shorebirds and raptors to name a few. This is a pleasant walk to start your day, as I know many of you do while walking dogs or with friends.

Bring: Binoculars and a Bird book! Water bottle, sunscreen.
Notes: Note the early start, we will leave promptly! I have three pair of binoculars to loan for the morning. Please stop by or give me a call if I can answer any questions.
