Week of August 20 -August 26

Weekly Schedule

Tuesday, AUGUST 21

Road Cycling:  3 Creek Ranch to National Museum of Wildlife Art
Time: 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Difficulty: Easy
Mileage:  15.5 miles R/T

Description: Join us for this very special outing and private guided tour at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. This is a very leisurely ride, so bring your townie, e-bike or anything you’re comfortable on. We can spend as much time there as we’d like, and sit outside for lunch if the group is so inclined. Admission is $14.00. We will travel mostly on bike paths with some wide bike lanes adjacent to roadway.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes: Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Wednesday, AUGUST 22

Road Cycling:  Moose to Jenny Lake
Time: 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Difficulty: Easy
Mileage:  14 miles R/T      Maximum Elevation: 6,790'      Elevation Gain: 350'

Description:  We’ll load up the bikes at the Nature Center, drive north to Moose and begin this ride at Dornan’s. This entire ride to jenny lake and back is along the stress-free pathway. Expect one hill to the top of Windy Point, then flat terrain and perhaps wildlife viewing through one of the most scenic bike rides in the world.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes: Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Evening Wildlife Drive
TIme: 6:30 PM - 9 PM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 6:30 PM

Description: Join us for a very casual drive north along Antelope Flats and Mormon Row to try our best to see wildlife. On any given evening, we might see bison, antelope, deer, raptors and songbirds, and a beautiful evening watching wildlife always stimulates interesting discussion on a range of natural history topics. I’ll bring a few snacks to enjoy at one of our pullouts, binoculars and a spotting scope.

Bring: Small daypack, water, warm layer if it cools off.
Notes: 6:30 PM departure! We will be viewing from the roadside and not hiking. We might need more than one vehicle depending on attendance.

Thursday, AUGUST 23

Road Cycling: Cedron Road Loop, Victor, Idaho
Time: 8 AM – 2 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8 AM
Difficulty: Moderate
Mileage:  26.5 miles R/T      Maximum Elevation: 6,193'      Elevation Gain: 460'

Description:  We’ll load up our bikes at the Nature Center and begin/end this ride in victor, Idaho. This is a very enjoyable ride along the rural back roads of the west side of Victor, Idaho along the base of the Big Hole Mountains. Starting and finishing at Fitzgerald’s bike shop, we will ride relatively flat terrain with small dips and rises on a quiet road that offers continuous views of Teton Valley and the west side of the Tetons. The northern end of our route takes us through Driggs, Idaho, where we return to Victor along the bike path. Great coffee and treats at Fitzgerald’s Bike shop awaits us at the finish. Depending on how the group feels, we can continue up the Alta Road another 8.2 miles to the overlook at the 2nd hairpin turn at the base of the Targhee Road.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes: Note early meeting time at the Nature Center. Expect minimal traffic on the Cedron Road. Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Friday, AUGUST 24

Birding Walk: South Park Management Area
Time: 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 7:30 AM
Difficulty: Easy

Description:  We will walk about 2 miles on a maintained two-track road through cottonwood and willow forest and adjacent to the Snake River-a fabulous place to see birds... The very first step to enjoying and appreciating birds is simply to increase our awareness of them. We’ll focus our time detecting the most common birds in the area, discuss identification skills using bird books and the latest ‘Birding Apps’ for the iPad, and some of the best places to watch birds. I encourage all of the ‘beginner birders’ out there to join us, as my goal is simply to help you ‘See more birds’…

Bring: Binoculars, water bottle, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes: I have three pairs of binoculars to loan for the morning. Please stop by or give me a call if I can answer any questions.
