Greetings from the Nature Center,

I am sending, as an attachment, the Schedule of Events for the upcoming week of July 22-28. I look forward to seeing you, and please let me know if I can be of assistance in any way.

Respectfully,

Description:  We’ll load up our bikes at the Nature Center and begin this ride at the Stilson Parking area in Wilson. This is an ‘out and back’ ride to the base of the Village, and we will remain on the pathway for this entire ride. Great refreshments at any one of the stops at the Village.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes:  Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Tuesday, july 23

Day Hike: Mt. Ellie Hike, Teton Pass
Time: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Difficulty: Easy
Mileage:  3.5 miles R/T      Maximum Elevation: 9,279'      Elevation Gain: 850'

We will start this hike from the parking lot on Teton Pass, hike approximately 2 miles to the top of Mt. Ellie. We will follow a ridge-top trail almost the entire way through open meadows of wildflowers and forest stands of subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce. This entire hike follows a well-worn trail, and offers one of the most spectacular views of the entire Jackson Hole valley. A fantastic way start to any day!

Bring: daypack, extra warm layer, rain/wind shell, refreshments.

NATURE CENTER
Time: 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Nature Center
Notes: Stop by the Nature Center for a casual visit to say hello, relax on the front lawn overlooking Spring Creek with a magnificent Teton Range backdrop, request some help planning your next outdoor adventure, or perhaps bring your guests for a tour of the Center.

Wednesday, july 24

Road Cycling:  3 Creek Ranch - Fish Creek Road

Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM

We will ride the first 8 miles with an elevation gain of 90 feet along the pathway from the Nature Center to the start of Fish Creek road. We will then ride the remaining 4.8 miles on Fish Creek, gaining the last 210’ of elevation gain in the final 2 miles to the end of the paved County road. Although there is not much of a shoulder on Fish Creek road, traffic is minimal and drivers are aware of cyclists.

'Naturalist's Notes' - The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE)
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Nature Center
Description:  Jackson Hole is situated near the middle of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, considered to be the largest, relatively intact temperate ecosystem in the lower 48 states. Yellowstone National Park, containing the world’s largest remaining geothermal features, is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In short, we live in a very special and unique part of the world. Please join me for a casual and entertaining program at the Nature Center as we explore the history and origins of the GYE.
Notes: Refreshments will be served.

Thursday, july 25

Day Hike: Atherton Ridge
Time: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Difficulty: Moderate
Mileage:  4.5 miles R/T (4 Up, 4 Down)      Maximum Elevation: 8,306'      Elevation Gain: 1,345'

This is a variation on the main gully trail to Atherton Ridge. We start from the same place at the Slide Lake campground, but quickly veer off to the south and begin climbing a beautiful ridgeline trail that gains about 1,200’ of elevation in the first 2 miles. This hike offers so much for the naturalist hiker in all of us..from hiking along an old forest fire burn area, wide vistas of the Red Hills and Gros Ventre Slide, endless sign of bighorn sheep, elk and deer, even an active high-elevation beaver lodge and ponds…and a spectacular panorama of the entire Teton Range from our destination. We will hike downhill for the remaining 2.5 miles back to our vehicle. This is a very enjoyable loop hike that offers a nice workout but with a high scenic reward at the end!

Bring: daypack, plenty of water, snacks, lunch, hiking poles, bear spray.
Notes: Dogs are welcome.

NATURE CENTER
Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Nature Center
Notes:  Stop by the Nature Center for a casual visit to say hello, relax on the front lawn overlooking Spring Creek with a magnificent Teton Range backdrop, request some help planning your next outdoor adventure, or perhaps bring your guests for a tour of the Center.

Friday, JULY 26

Birding Walk - bring your binoculars and bird book! 3 Creek Ranch
Time: 7:30 AM – 10:00 AM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 7:30 AM
Difficulty: Easy

We’ll spend the morning looking for birds from the Nature Center and along 3 Creek Drive. I have enjoyed watching birds from this road for the past 16 years, noting a diversity of waterfowl in the ponds, grassland birds in the meadows, shorebirds and raptors to name a few. This is a pleasant walk to start your day, as I know many of you do while walking dogs or with friends.
Bring: Binoculars and a Bird book! Water bottle, sunscreen.
Notes: Note the early start, we will leave promptly! I have three pair of binoculars to loan for the morning. Please stop by or give me a call if I can answer any questions.
