Greetings from the Nature Center,

Below is the Schedule of Events for the upcoming week of August 19-25.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance.

Respectfully,
Roger

We’ll load up our bikes at the Nature Center and begin this ride at Gros Ventre Junction. We’ll start there and our entire ride will be on the bike path, gaining 100’ in the first 5.5miles to Moose, and gain another 350’ over the next 7.5 miles to South Jenny Lake. This is a splendid ride along the stress-free bike pathway. Expect relatively flat terrain all the way to Moose, with one hill to Windy Point with the spectacular Grand Teton landscape always in view.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes:  Opportunities exist for additional mileage if the group so desires. Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Tuesday, august 20

Day Hike: Goodwin Lake
Time: 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Difficulty: Moderate
Mileage:  8 miles R/T      Maximum Elevation: 9,500'      Elevation Gain: 880'

Goodwin Lake sits at the base of Jackson Peak, Jackson Hole’s mountain landmark. This maintained trail within the Gros Ventre Wilderness climbs at a moderate grade via several switchbacks to a scenic ridge trail to the lake. Beautiful stands of Douglas fir, wildflower, birds and Teton vistas make this a very nice hike.

Bring: daypack, lunch, rain jacket, warm layer, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent.
Notes: We plan to have a relaxing lunch at the lake before our hike back down. Access to this area is weather dependent.

Wednesday, august 21

Road Cycling:  3 Creek Ranch - Antelope Flats Loop
Time: 12:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 12:00 PM
Difficulty: Strenuous
Mileage:  44.5 miles R/T      Maximum Elevation: 6,790'      Elevation Gain: 380'

This is a strenuous ride due to long miles, but we will maintain a gentle, 14-18 mph pace. This ride is mostly on flats with one gentle hill up Antelope Flats to mailbox corner-the highest point of our ride. We’ll begin this ride from the Nature Center, ride 5 miles into town, continuing north on the bike path 13 miles and gain 315 feet of elevation to Moose, then continue north past Moose for one mile on the main highway to the North AntelopeFlats Junction. From here we ride 13.5 miles around Antelope Flats back to G-V Junction, and return to 3 Creek Ranch. This is an excellent ride if you are just starting or wanting assistance learning the finer points to riding that new road bike! Expect one of the most scenic bike rides in the world.

Bring: bike, helmet, water bottles, warm layer, sunscreen.
Notes: Note the start at 12 noon from the Nature Center. Restrooms along the way, including a good cup of coffee and snacks at the Kelly store. Please stop by or give me a call if you need help preparing your bike or other cycling needs.

Thursday, august 22

Day Hike: Atherton Ridge
Time: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Place: Meet at the Nature Center at 8:30 AM
Difficulty: Moderate
Mileage:  5 miles R/T      Maximum Elevation: 8,400'      Elevation Gain: 1,592'

We will start this hike at the Atherton Creek Campground, 6 miles up the Gros Ventre Road. This hike starts off with a bang!..We will gain all our elevation in the first 2.5 miles, 1,350 ‘ to be exact, then we are rewarded with spectacular views in all directions as we continue along the second half of the hike on a gentle but sustained downhill trail back to our vehicle. This is one of my favorite hikes as it offers spectacular, sweeping views of the Teton Range, the Red Hills and Gros Ventre Slide, all from a beautiful ridge line trail. This hike also offers a good short workout for the day.

Bring: daypack, plenty of water, snacks, lunch, hiking poles if you have them.
Notes: Dogs are welcome to join us!

Friday, august 23

Birding Walk: Bring your binoculars and bird book! At 3 Creek Ranch
Time: 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM
Location: Meet at the Nature Center at 7:30 AM
Difficulty: Easy

We’ll spend the morning looking for birds from the NatureCenter and along 3 Creek Drive. I have enjoyed watching birds from this road for the past16 years, noting a diversity of waterfowl in the ponds, grassland birds in the meadows, shorebirds and raptors to name a few. This is a pleasant walk to start your day, as I know many of you do while walking dogs or with friends.

Bring: Binoculars and a Bird book! Water bottle, sunscreen.
Notes: Note the early start, we will leave promptly! I have three pair of binoculars to loan for the morning. Please stop by or give me a call if I can answer any questions.
